S. Mark Taper Life Science Botanical Garden

Come explore the great outdoors at the S. Mark Taper Life Science Botanical Garden. Here you can find plants native to California, the Mediterranean basin, Chile, South Africa and Australia, as well as native bees, beetles, butterflies, lizards and many species of birds! Perfect activity for those who love to be surrounded by nature. 

What better way to start the Spring season in the Valley off than with a perfect lemon bundt cake. Follow the recipe below for this beautifully moist and zesty Springtime treat!

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350˚F
  2. In a medium sized bowl, whisk the flour and the baking powder
  3. In a large sized bowl, cream the butter, the sugar, and the salt for 3 minutes to create a fluffy consistency. Next, add the eggs, beating them one at a time. Then, add the lemon zest, the lemon juice, and the vanilla —- mix all together
  4. Pour half of the flour and mix; Pour in the milk and mix; Pour in the rest of the flour and mix
  5. Using a nonstick, cooking spray, grease a 10-inch bundt pan. Pour the batter into the pan, making sure to smooth the top and release any air bubbles
  6. Bake the cake for 50 minutes
  7. Now, make the lemon glaze: in a small sized bowl, mix the sugar and the lemon juice. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and then microwave for 30 seconds again. Make sure the sugar completely dissolves —- set aside
  8. Now, make the lemon icing: in a medium sized bowl, sift the powdered sugar. Add the lemon juice, and mix until smooth —- set aside
  9. Once the cake is done baking, let it sit for 10 minutes. After, remove the cake from the bundt pan and place the cake over a baking sheet
  10. Now, poke holes around the cake. Then, brush the cake with the lemon glaze. Let cake cool completely (for at least 1 hour)
  11. Pour the lemon icing over the cake. Let the icing dry completely (for at least 30 minutes)
  12. Transfer the cake to a serving platter, slice, and serve
  13. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

LEMON CAKE

  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter (2 sticks, room temperature)
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon zest
  • ¼ cup of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • nonstick, cooking spray (for greasing)

LEMON GLAZE

  • ½ cup of granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup of lemon juice

LEMON ICING

  • 2 cups of powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
